Positioning vs Branding: Stop Confusing Them
Published: 2026-10-16 • Author: Ivan Turatti
Positioning is a decision about where you compete and for whom. Branding is the expression of that decision — the name, the voice, the visual system.
| Positioning | Branding | |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Where do we compete, for whom, against what? | How does that look, sound and feel? |
| Output | Written decisions | Sensory and verbal system |
| Changes | Rarely | As contexts shift |
The test
Cover your logo on your last marketing piece. If someone in your industry can name three competitors it could belong to, you have a positioning problem. No typeface fixes it.
A position without a stated cost is a preference. If saying no has never cost you anything, you haven't drawn a boundary.
The four boundaries to write
- Audience boundary: Who you decline to serve.
- Service boundary: What you refuse to do.
- Method boundary: How you refuse to deliver.
- Claim boundary: What you refuse to promise.
